Australian MotoGP star Jack Miller will be immortalized at Phillip Island with a corner at the famous race track that bears his name.
Key points:
- Jack Miller to join other Australian MotoGP legends to have a corner named after him at Phillip Island
- Sunday’s race is the first time MotoGP has been held in Australia since 2019
- Miller is yet to win at Phillip Island, having finished third three years ago
Miller joins Australian cycling royalty Mick Doohan, Casey Stoner and Wayne Gardner in being permanently remembered at the Victorian track.
The fourth lap of the island circuit has been renamed Miller Corner ahead of Sunday’s grand prix, the first MotoGP race in Australia since 2019.
Fans have called him Miller since the Townsville product burst onto the MotoGP scene in 2015, but it became official on Saturday.
“It’s a tremendous honor. The scale hasn’t sunk in yet,” Miller said during the presentation.
“This is amazing, something I couldn’t have even dreamed of as a kid, to have a corner on this magical racetrack in my name, yes, more than words.
“It’s an unreal part of the track and so many historic moments have happened here, so I feel very lucky to be able to claim this one.”
Stoner, who won six consecutive Australian GPs between 2007 and 2012, has been named in his honour.
The legendary Stoner, who won the 2007 and 2011 MotoGP titles, was in the Ducati garages this weekend offering advice to fellow Australian and Miller team-mate Francesco Bagnaia.
Miller is looking to push for his first MotoGP win at Phillip Island after finishing third in the Australian race three years ago.
The 27-year-old is in excellent form ahead of his home GP after winning in Japan last month and claiming a podium in Thailand two weeks ago.
Earlier, Miller booked his spot in the top 10 qualifying session.
He came out late to set his best lap of the weekend, finishing sixth after Saturday’s opening session at Phillip Island.
With just three minutes to go, Miller still sat as low as 22nd, but was able to find some extra pace on his Ducati to finish crucially in the top 10.
