Three people were killed in a head-on collision near the British Columbia-Alberta border

Three people have been killed, according to police, in a head-on collision on Highway 3 in the East Kootenay region of BC.

Elk Valley RCMP says the collision happened Monday afternoon at around 2.30pm, just east of Sparwood, and involved an SUV and a commercial tractor-trailer.

According to police, the westbound SUV was trying to overtake other vehicles when it collided head-on with the eastbound tractor-trailer.

“The collision turned the full-size white SUV upside down, which then caught fire almost immediately,” the BC RCMP sergeant said. Chris Manseau.

“Rapid action witnesses at the scene rescued the driver of the commercial truck from his vehicle before the fire quickly consumed both vehicles. It was later determined that the SUV had three dead occupants.”

Police thanked witnesses and spectators who assisted in the removal of the driver, and also for assisting in the investigation.

The RCMP added that they and the BC Coroners Service are investigating the collision.

A community of about 4,000 people, Sparwood is almost halfway between Fernie and the BC-Alberta border.
