One person was missing after an empty rental boat was found adrift in Vancouver’s English Bay on Wednesday, with the keys still on and the accelerator still on.
The Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC) said rescuers searched for the missing person overnight.
“We will continue the search this morning,” he said. Wilson Ho, JRCC Public Affairs Officer, early Thursday.
A Parks Canada employee found the 17-foot unmanned fiberglass rental boat around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. The JRCC issued a May relay to alert other sailors and began a search.
Four Canadian Coast Guard vessels, a Vancouver Police boat, a Royal Canadian Navy search and rescue vessel, and a Royal Canadian Air Force helicopter were called in to help.
“As soon as we had the assets ready to go out, we were there looking for that missing person,” Ho said.
He said the boat was rented to a Vancouver business and it was not yet clear if anyone else was on board.
Anyone with information about the missing person or who saw the boat on Wednesday should call 911 or the JRCC at 250-413-8933.
