Devon police recover two bodies after a boat capsized in the lake

Police searching for two people missing after a boat capsized in a lake south of Devon have recovered two bodies.

Devon and Cornwall police said families have been informed of the development and are receiving support from specially trained officers. Formal identification has not yet taken place. Earlier, the Maritime Accident Investigation Division (MAIB) said on its website that the two people who were not identified were disabled.

Emergency services and rescue crews managed to rescue four people after the incident on Wednesday afternoon in Roadford Lake, Okehampton.

Two people were recovered from the water and were discharged by paramedics at the scene. Two more people were removed from the water and taken to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth for treatment. One has been discharged but the other is still in critical condition. No other boat was involved in the incident.

CEO Dan Evans said: “This is an extremely distressing incident and our thoughts are with everyone involved and their loved ones, with whom we are working closely to provide help and support whenever we can.

“Every effort has been made to locate the two missing people as soon as possible. Tragically, we can confirm that the bodies of two people have been located and recovered this afternoon. Our priority is to support their families. “

Various agencies were deployed, including police, firefighters, ambulances, air ambulances, coastguards and search and rescue teams with specialized equipment and drones.

Police said those traveling in the group were all adults and believed to be locals from Devon.

MAIB previously wrote on Twitter that it had begun its investigation into “the capsizing of a motor boat yesterday on Roadford Lake in Devon.”

The 730-acre lake, which has been a reservoir since 1989, is often used by people for kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding and sailing.
