A new engine, a new Warzone, a new AI, the same old Call of Duty for Modern Warfare II.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, not to be confused with all the other times it has been called that, is this year’s Call of Duty game.
Infinity Ward is offering a follow-up to its 2019 series reboot with all the usual bombshells. It will come with a new version of Battle Royale Warzone, as well as various engine upgrades, AI enhancements and more.
The game will be released on October 28 for current and state-of-the-art consoles, as well as for PC. The series will also return to Steam, after abandoning Valve’s digital distribution platform in favor of Battle.net, owned by Activision-Blizzard, for Black Ops 4 in 2018. There is no explanation as to why they have changed course, although the game will be available on both platforms.
In addition to the previous trailer and Warzone 2.0, Infinity Ward and Activision announced that a new Warzone mobile game is being developed and are unifying the series with a new engine, yet to be announced. This means that future games, Modern Warfare II and Warzone 2.0 will work with the same. This should help to share assets as well as general development practices.
As for the new engine, Infinity Ward says the game will be the most realistic and amazing ever made, an annual proclamation and also makes big claims about AI. This is especially relevant for the cooperative mode of special operations.
Pre-booking on any platform gives you access to an upcoming open beta for the multiplayer game, which seems as crazy as ever. If you do this on PlayStation, you will be able to access it before other platforms. There will also be more pictures at the Summer Game Fest tonight.
Another longer trailer also debuted at Summer Game Fest, entitled Dark Water:
Yes, this is Call of Duty.
