Police have launched an investigation after two disabled people were killed when a motor boat capsized on a lake.
The bodies of two missing people were recovered yesterday at Lake Roadford, near Okehampton, Devon, about 24 hours after the boat capsized.
A third person, a woman in her 50s, is still in critical condition at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth.
Devon and Cornwall Police and the Maritime Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) have now opened an investigation into the incident.
Superintendent Toby Davies of Devon and Cornwall Police said: “This has been a tragic incident in which two people have been killed.
“We continue to support all the families involved with the deployment of specialized family liaison officers and our thoughts remain with these families at this difficult time.
“Parallel investigations will analyze the circumstances surrounding the incident with the MAIB, as well as identify ways to prevent a similar incident from occurring in the future.
“These investigations have already been linked to HM Coroner and we expect this to progress further over the next week.”
Six people were on board when it turned around around 1.30pm on Wednesday.
Two people were taken to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, where one remains in critical condition and another was discharged.
The other two were taken out of the water and checked by paramedics before being discharged at the scene.
All the people on the boat were locals from Devon, investigators said.
“All lines of research are being reviewed”
The MAIB did not respond to reports that the victims were in wheelchairs at the time, nor whether investigators would investigate whether they were tied to the boat and carrying buoyancy supports.
A spokesman said: “Our research is in its early stages and our current focus is to gather as much evidence as possible.
“All lines of research are open and are being examined.”
The South West Lakes Trust, which manages the lake near Dartmoor, said its on-site activity center will be closed until further notice.
Roadford Lake Sailing Club said: “Our thoughts are also with the staff at the center who did some heroic deeds to minimize the loss.
“We would also like to thank the emergency services who attended, who provided support to the coast and spent a lot of time doing water search and rescue.”
Bob Tolley, the mayor of Okehampton, said: “We are all thinking of these poor families involved, and our condolences to all.”
