A woman killed and a man seriously injured by a fallen tree in Tasmania

A woman has died and a man has been seriously injured after being crushed by a fallen tree in northwestern Tasmania during bad weather.

Tasmanian police were called to a private property in Beulah, near Sheffield, around 5pm on Saturday, following reports that two people were trapped under a tree.

The 54-year-old woman died after being beaten while outside.

The 54-year-old man was taken to Launceston General Hospital with serious but not fatal injuries.

Strong winds have ravaged the state and have prompted Tasmanian police to urge Tasmanians to stay inside and reconsider their need to travel on the roads.

At around the time of the incident, a gust of wind of 115 kilometers per hour was recorded in Sheffield.

Thousands of people have been left without electricity, and police have responded to several calls from fallen trees and power lines on the region’s roads.

Up to 14,000 properties were without electricity at one stage.

The Bureau of Meteorology forecast destructive gusts of wind of about 125 kilometers per hour.

Snow is also expected to fall as low as 400 meters.
