Real Madrid have agreed to sign Monaco’s Aurélien Tchouaméni for a six-year deal, the two clubs announced on Saturday.
The 22-year-old French midfielder will join the European champions for a fee of 80 million euros, with another 20 million euros in supplements (a total of 85.3 million pounds). “Tchouaméni will be released on June 14 after his medical examination,” a statement from Madrid said. “Tchouaméni will then be announced in the media.”
Tchouaméni becomes the second most expensive player in the history of Monaco only behind Kylian Mbappé, who signed with Paris Saint-Germain for 180 million euros in August 2017. Tchouaméni, named best player of the year of Ligue 1 in 2020-21 after joining from Bordeaux for 16 million euros, Tchouaméni was in high demand, with Liverpool and PSG also betting on signing him.
Real Madrid, who had been negotiating with the player since March, reached an agreement before the competition. Considered one of the most exciting young talents in the game, Tchouaméni is already a regular in the French national team and was part of the starting line-up for the League of Nations final against Spain last year. He accumulated 50 appearances with Monaco in all competitions in 2021-22, with five goals and three assists.
Capable of playing as a defensive and central midfielder, Tchouaméni will be a stellar but aged Real Madrid midfielder led by Luka Modric, 36, Toni Kroos, 32, and Casemiro, 30. He will join his compatriot. French midfielder Eduardo Camavinga. 19, who signed for Madrid in September 2021 from Rennes in an agreement worth up to 40 million euros.
