Liverpool are expected to close a £ 64million deal with Benfica today for Darwin Núñez, and the striker will begin a medical tomorrow.
Julian Ward, Liverpool’s football manager, has been in Portugal over the weekend to beat the transfer that could make the 22-year-old the most expensive player in the club’s history.
Liverpool will pay £ 75m (£ 64m) for Núñez with £ 12.8m extra potentially linked to appearances and £ 8.5m based on the striker’s performance on a successful team.
Virgil van Dijk is currently the record signing for Liverpool, with £ 75 million, following his move from Southampton in 2018.
Núñez, who was not part of the Uruguayan national team for yesterday’s match with Panama, is in Madrid and Liverpool.
