The Starfield trailer shows more than 1,000 explorable planets, flying spaceships and more

Starfield, Bethesda’s new and ambitious role-playing game, seems to be an amalgam of The Elder Scrolls and ambitious space games like Elite Dangerous and the Star Citizen project. In a live presentation on Sunday, game director Todd Howard raised the cover of the highly anticipated game to reveal customizable and flying starships, as well as 100 star systems and more than 1,000 different worlds to explore.

The long trailer, shown during a joint presentation with other Xbox Game Studios projects, and scheduled to coincide with the Summer Games Fest, also set the story of the game. In 2330, Starfield players ally with Constellation, described as “the last group of space explorers,” who are on a quest to recover lost artifacts of alien origin. The cast is made up of a multigenerational and multicultural team, and the story could also reflect or try to prove the existence of the true divinity.

Regardless, there will be spaceships, sunsets, and fellow useful robots, along with what promises to be another masterful soundtrack by Inon Zur. In the tradition of other Bethesda role-playing games, Starfield will include the creation of highly customizable characters, elaborate weapons, and weapon modifications, as well as player bases. The highlight of Sunday’s presentation, however, was the ship’s customization system, which includes options for various components from various manufacturers. Players will even be able to fly and fight their ships from a first or third person perspective.

Announced in 2018 along with The Elder Scrolls 6, Starfield was originally released on November 11, 2022. Last month, that date was postponed to the first half of 2023. The delay caused an apology from the Xbox boss, Phil Spencer.

“These decisions are difficult for the teams that make the games and our fans,” Spencer wrote on social media at the time. “While I fully support giving teams time to launch these great games when they are ready, we listen to the feedback. We hope to provide quality and consistency, we will continue to work to better meet those expectations.”

Starfield will be released for Windows PC and Xbox Series X, and will be available for play via Xbox Game Pass.
