A man has died in a multi-vehicle crash on York Boulevard near the 403 access ramp on Saturday evening.
Initial police reports said seven vehicles were involved, but a police update only lists three vehicles that came into contact.
Dave Thompson, a Hamilton paramedic service supervisor, told CBC Hamilton this morning that not all of the vehicles believed to be involved collided with each other, “as they had to turn around to avoid it.”
Police say at about 7:30 p.m., a 61-year-old Hamilton man was driving a 2003 Nissan sedan heading south on York Boulevard (downtown) to the bridge near the QEW access ramp.
“He then entered the lanes heading north and entered the road of a 2008 Jeep Liberty,” a police press release read.
“The driver’s side of the front of the Nissan vehicle hit the rear side of the driver of the Jeep vehicle.”
Police say the Jeep suffered “significant damage” before stopping on the east sidewalk.
Officials say Nissan turned counterclockwise in a 2022 Mercedes-Benz, with the front of the Mercedes-Benz knocking on the Nissan’s passenger door. Both vehicles stopped at the curb.
Police say the 61-year-old Nissan man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Thompson said a 20-year-old woman was taken to hospital in stable condition, but police say two women in the back of the Mercedes-Benz were taken to hospital with minor injuries.
Police say the deterioration and speed are not yet ruled out as the cause of the crash.
CBC is asking the police for clarity on some of the details of the crash.
The collision closed the road for six hours.
This is the 13th fatality of traffic in the city this year and the second in which there is a driver.
