The salary increase will take effect on July 1. This is the first salary increase for federal politicians since 2019.
The Remuneration Court cited wage increases in the economy as a whole in its announcement.
“Overall earnings data reflect a steady period of growing wage growth across the economy, with the annual growth rate rising for each of the last five quarters from a low of 1.4 percent to December 2020 “, it can be said in a statement.
Politicians in parliament have no say in how much they earn, and the court makes its decisions independently.

The court is tasked with determining a salary that is competitive enough to “attract and retain people of caliber.”
“Many of these charges do not expect or require monetary compensation for their functions in the public sector to be set at private sector levels,” the court said.
“Rather, the charges are for the public good and in setting remuneration, the Court has traditionally set rates below those of the private sector.”
The court’s announcement came in the evening before the Fair Work Commission announced its decision on the minimum wage, which should be paid today.
