Symptoms include facial paralysis, difficulty closing eyes, hearing loss, and difficulty with facial expressions.
Most patients recover all their movements in a few weeks or months. But in some cases it can cause a permanent reduction in movement. Treatment includes antivirals and steroids.
Some doctors may also recommend facial exercises, although there is little evidence that this works. About five out of every 100,000 Americans develop this syndrome each year.
