The third major of the 2022 golf season has come with controversy swirling behind the scenes. However, the USGA is making sure to get as little wind as possible out of the sails of its main event as the 2022 U.S. Open contenders face the Country Club. It will be the first time since 1988 that a national champion will be crowned in Brookline, Massachusetts, and some of the top contenders are entering with impetus playing their best golf of the season lately.
This year’s affair is set on a course filled with most of the best golfers in the world. Masters champion Scottie Scheffler and PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas are looking to bend. Scheffler aims to become the sixth golfer to win the U.S. Masters and Open in the same season, while Thomas wants to become the seventh in history to win PGA and PG titles. US Open Consecutively.
However, it is not a favorite in Brookline either. That honor belongs to Rory McIlroy, who has more momentum than anyone on the field after defending his title at the RBC Canadian Open. McIlroy has three other top 10 finishes in his previous four starts and is one of four golfers to finish in the top 10 in three (or more) of the last five U.S. Open.
The man who has made the most headlines this week, however, has been Phil Mickelson, who missed the top two majors of the year amid the aftermath of the controversial comments. Mickelson returned to action last week and enters the Country Club still looking for a US Open to complete his Grand Slam career. Unlike 2021, when he entered the U.S. Open after a major championship victory, Lefty this year has played only three rounds of competitive golf over the past four and a half months. There is no doubt that his sixth place finish in his U.S. Open career continues to haunt him, and his top 10 in that event since 1995 show that most of him is in the middle of it. sometimes.
While attending the U.S. Open can be a lot of fun, just being able to watch golf on the biggest stages of the game is an incredible pleasure every year. Here at CBSSports.com we are happy to offer you wall-to-wall coverage of the US Open all week long.
