Demand for PlayStation 5 continues to rise and Sony is committed to increasing console production. Sony Interactive Entertainment president Jim Ryan says the company is increasing production to levels “never before achieved.”
At his 2022 business briefing, Ryan said that Sony intends to close the gap between sales of PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 this year. Since COVID-19 severely affected supply chains at all levels, it has been difficult for many to get their hands on a PlayStation 5.
The demand for PlayStation 5 is quite unprecedented, though not surprising. Sony data shows that the company is able to sell 80,000 PlayStation 5 consoles in 82 minutes. It currently takes nine days to sell the same number of PlayStation 4 units. As the company expects supply chain shortages to be reduced throughout the year, Sony expects to be able to produce more units.
However, Sony is aware that the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine may affect the ability to insure parts and logistics. To avoid further disruption, Sony is purchasing components from various vendors. The company believes that this will lead to “greater agility in unstable market conditions”.
In the briefing, Ryan states that Sony is “planning large additional increases in console production. [it] at production levels that [it has] This will be followed by a first increase this year. Earlier this year, Sony confirmed that it planned to produce more PlayStation 4 units as the PlayStation 5 shortage continued. company announced a plan to produce approximately one million PlayStation 4 consoles.
The supply chain landscape continues to fluctuate. Regions around the world continue to face blockages and other barriers due to COVID-19. It’s hard to say how many PlayStation 5s will be available this quarter and the rest of the year.
As this generation of consoles continues, meeting the demand of gamers will be of the utmost importance to Sony. This is especially true if the PlayStation 5 is expected to exceed the 117.2 million units sold of the PlayStation 4.
