Two children hospitalized after a “serious” Ballymena motorcycle accident

Two children have been taken to hospital after a serious accident involving scramblers in Ballymena on Thursday afternoon.

The incident took place in the Dunclug area of ​​the town around 5pm and it is understood that the children involved were between 9 and 11 years old.

Local MP Ian Paisley said the children involved were “in our prayers” and confirmed he would speak to police on Friday to “discuss some proposals to ensure these circumstances can be avoided in the future”.

“The accident that involved children last night in Ballymena is very worrying. To the young people and families involved as all our thoughts are with them,” Paisley said.

“I agreed to talk to the police about the matter today.

“Once again we are indebted to the Air Ambulance and the emergency services who have worked so hard to get the children the medical care they needed.”

According to the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS), three emergency crews attended the crash and Air Ambulance was also involved in the response.

It is understood that one of the children was taken to Royal Victoria Hospital by air ambulance and the other was taken by ambulance.

An NIAS spokesman said: “NIAS received a call on 999 at 4.47pm following reports of two children being injured in a bicycle incident in the Dunclug area of ​​Ballymena this afternoon.

“NIAS sent three emergency crews and a doctor to the scene and also ordered the incident to the Charity Air Ambulance, with the HEMS crew on board.”

SDLP councilor Eugene Reid wrote on social media: “There has been a serious incident tonight in the Dunclug area. The children are seriously injured and in hospital.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the wounded and their families. I wish you a speedy recovery.

“I am also grateful to the local people who treated the injured immediately after the incident and to the emergency services who provided first aid and ensured that the injured received the best medical treatment.”
