EU membership
The European Commission is expected to support the idea of granting Ukraine official candidate status in its application for EU membership. Commissioners meet to decide on their recommendation with an announcement expected later.
Leaders in France, Germany, Italy and Romania have already publicly backed Ukraine’s bid to join the EU, saying it should be given “immediate” candidate status.
The 27 EU leaders will discuss the issue at a summit on 23 and 24 June. Some members have already expressed reservations.
Candidate status will only be the next step on Ukraine’s path to full EU membership, which French President Macron said earlier could take years.
Military evolution
Ukraine has now lost up to half of its military equipment, says the country’s deputy defense minister.
Denys Sharapov called for more military aid as heavy fighting continues in eastern Ukraine, with heavy casualties on both sides.
On the ground, Ukraine says Russia is concentrating its forces on an assault on the eastern city of Slovyansk. Struggles for full control of Severodonetsk also continue.
