Clint Bowyer, a Fox Sports analyst and former NASCAR Cup Series driver, was involved in a car accident in Missouri last week in which he struck and killed a woman walking down a road, authorities said.
Mr Bowyer, 43, “braked immediately” and called 911 after hitting the woman while driving on a divided U.S. road on Lake Ozark, Missouri, shortly before 9 p.m., June 5. according to a police accident report.
Authorities said the front of Mr. Bowyer was badly damaged and showed “zero” signs of deterioration after the crash. He provided a breath sample that showed he had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.000 percent, the police report said.
Mr. Bowyer and Fox Sports did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The woman who died was identified as Mary Jane Simmons, 47, of Camdenton, Missouri. The police report said she was hit by the front of the driver’s side of Mr.’s car. Bowyer and then hit the car windshield. The impact catapulted her more than 260 feet, according to the report.
Mr. Bowyer, of Mocksville, North Carolina, noted emergency medical workers who responded to his 911 call to Ms. Simmons, according to the report. Workers tried to resuscitate her, authorities said, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Ms. Simmons’ belongings were strewn across an exit ramp, and police found a “crystalline substance” among them that was “believed to be methamphetamine,” according to the police report. Residents of a caravan park where Ms. Simmons told investigators they believed Ms. Simmons “was under the influence of drugs,” the report said.
Mr. Bowyer was a NASCAR driver for 15 years. In addition to his 10 NASCAR Cup Series victories, he was the 2008 NASCAR Xfinity Series Champion and won the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series three times. After his last season of competition, in 2020, Mr. Bowyer became a full-time analyst for Fox Sports coverage of the cup series.
