Byrne-Quinn turned himself in to police, not to report what he had done, but to tell them he had been assaulted.
Maloney spent six months in Perth Hospital.
He underwent 16 surgeries and had to be taught to walk and talk again.
The judge said that within five seconds, Byrne-Quinn ruined Maloney’s life as well as his own.
