Rich McCormick, an emergency physician and retired sailor, will win the Republican nomination for the CNN projects in the 6th district of the Georgia Congress.

McCormick, who won a plurality of votes in the May 24 primary, faced attorney Jake Evans in Tuesday’s second round for the Atlanta metropolitan district. Although Evans benefited from the endorsement of former President Donald Trump, he did not greatly improve his 24% turnout in the primaries.

McCormick, meanwhile, had the support of others within the Republican Party, including House Minority Whip Steve Scalise, as well as PAC support for the Club for Growth. He was also the main fundraiser in the field, raising more than $ 3 million and almost double what Evans contributed.

Despite not having the support of the former president, McCormick presented himself as a MAGA-style conservative.

This is McCormick’s second congressional candidacy. In 2020, he lost a tight race to Democratic MP Carolyn Bordeaux in the neighboring district of the 7th Congress. After the census-driven redistribution of districts placed part of the old 7th District in the new 6th District, McCormick launched his bid for the most Republican-friendly seat. (The current member of the 6th House, Democrat Lucy McBath, defeated Bordeaux last month in a primary to represent the new Seventh.)

The new district is very Republican, and McCormick is a clear favorite to win the seat in November.
