Canada Basketball on Tuesday announced a roster of 14 senior male players ahead of the next qualifying window for the FIBA World Cup that includes players such as RJ Barrett, Jamal Murray and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
The 14 men in the squad have accepted a three-year commitment to the team and it is complementary to the previously announced winter core.
“The true value of chemistry, camaraderie and continuity cannot be overlooked when building any team,” the Toronto Raptors and Canada’s head coach Nick Nurse said in a statement. “By bringing together core groups of players and staff committed to representing Canada over the next few years, we firmly believe that it will position this program for sustained success, both now and in the future.”
Canada Basketball also announced a Canada Day qualifier in Hamilton against the Dominican Republic, which is the first time Canada will play at home since February 2020.
“Hamilton has a long history of basketball and has great basketball programs and fans who support the game,” Canada CEO Rowan Barrett said in a statement. “Hamilton is also home to a number of athletes within our national selection programs.”
Along with the Dominican Republic, Canada will face the US Virgin Islands and the Bahamas in Group C of the World Cup qualifying round.
The FIBA 2023 Basketball World Cup is scheduled for the Philippines and Japan from August 25 to September 10, 2023.
