Twitter brings its closed caption switch to Android and iOS

Twitter gives you the power to turn subtitles on or off on your mobile device. The social network has begun rolling out a subtitle switch for everyone on Android and iOS, a couple of months after it started testing the feature. Whenever a video posted to the platform has subtitles available, you’ll see a CC button at the top right; just tap it to turn subtitles on or off.

It’s a great addition for accessibility purposes, as it allows you to display subtitles whenever you want. Before, you will only see the CC button on the web and in the subtitles on your mobile phone if the sound is muted. In addition, subtitles automatically disappear when you zoom in on a video, as it allows sound playback. A few years ago, you even had to go to accessibility settings to turn on captions if you want to see the captions of your videos. That said, the feature has one limitation: the button will only appear for a video if a subtitle has been provided.

Twitter introduced automatically generated subtitles for the videos in December, which is not related to that particular feature, according to a spokesman who spoke to The Verge. However, they will only be shown on muted videos unless you choose to view them at all times on the accessibility settings page of the website. There is also no way to report currently inaccurate automated subtitles.
