Redlands Mayor Karen Williams collides with car “after drinking several glasses of wine”

Redlands City Councilwoman Karen Williams has admitted to driving after drinking “several glasses of wine” Thursday night.

The ABC understands that Ms. Williams was taken to hospital with minor injuries after her car crashed that night.

A Queensland police spokesman said investigations were continuing into an accident in which a van “went off the road and hit a tree” at the intersection of Queen and Wellington Streets in Cleveland “around 9 p.m. Thursday night.

“The driver, a 55-year-old woman, suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment,” the spokesman said.

Police said no one else was injured in the crash and the investigation is continuing.

In the morning, the Redlands City Council budget for 2022-23 was approved.

“I’m so sorry for my actions”

In a statement to the ABC, Williams said he “made a serious misjudgment and drove after drinking several glasses of wine.”

“I am very sorry for my actions and I am incredibly grateful that no one else has been involved or injured,” Ms Williams said.

“I will seek advice and continue to assist the police in their investigations.”

Ms Williams has recently been in the media after commenting on the conviction of an 18-year-old man convicted of manslaughter for the deaths of Matthew Field and Kate Leadbetter in 2021.

The teen was under the effects of drugs and alcohol when he hit Mr. Field and Mrs. Leadbetter with a four-wheel drive stolen at speeding in Alexandra Hills.

Ms. Williams was the main petitioner who supported a petition to appeal the conviction of the teen accused of her death.

The petition called for the case to be appealed because his six-year sentence without parole was “manifestly inappropriate.”

He also called for tougher juvenile justice laws, including reinstating non-compliance with bail as a crime.
