Fifty-nine percent of Americans disapprove of the Supreme Court’s decision to revoke Roe v. Wade and remove federal protections from abortion rights, according to a new CBS News / YouGov reaction poll. Among women surveyed, 67% disapprove.
Why it’s important: The new poll confirms what polls before the decision showed us: that most Americans support Roe.
- 52% say the court’s decision is a “step back” for the United States, 31% say it is a “step forward” and 17% say no.
Between the lines: the opinion is clearly divided according to the lines of the party. 78% of Republicans approve of the decision, compared to 38% of independents and 17% of Democrats.
What to see: The public believes the court will re-examine other civil rights set by precedent.
- 57% believe that same-sex marriage rights are likely to be limited, and 55% believe that access to birth control will be limited.
