The Smith County Sheriff’s Office received a call around 12:35 a.m. alerting them of shooting victims at an event in a large pasture in Winona “described as a trail walk, vehicle ride all-terrain vehicle and horse show, ”the office said in a press release.
An altercation near the concert stage caused “one or more groups of walkers” to shoot at the crowd, witnesses told investigators. A second shooting took place when attendees at the event recovered the weapons from security personnel who had confiscated them before allowing entry to the concert, according to the press release.
A third shooting took place after law enforcement arrived, the sheriff’s office said.
“At this time it is believed that all the injuries took place during the incident of the original shooting, as law enforcement did not locate new victims at the scene after the third shooting,” the press release said. .
Four of the people shot were transported to hospitals in the area, the sheriff’s office said. According to the press release, a person who was shot in the face was airlifted to a critical condition Tyler hospital.
“Only one victim remained in hospital this morning and is in critical but stable condition,” the sheriff’s office said.
Investigators are interviewing witnesses and want to speak with the event’s promoter and security company, according to the statement.
