The Loop: Ghislaine Maxwell convicted, Donald Trump’s actions on January 6 and Nick Kyrgios’ savage Wimbledon victory

Hello. It’s Wednesday, June 29th and you’re reading The Loop, a look at today’s news.

Let’s start here: Ghislaine Maxwell has been convicted

British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell, who was convicted in December for helping sex offender Jeffrey Epstein sexually abuse teenage girls, has received her conviction.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Maxwell has been sentenced to 20 years in prison by the federal court in Manhattan
  • U.S. circuit judge Alison Nathan said Maxwell did not appear to express remorse or accept responsibility.
  • Before the verdict was handed down, Maxwell said Epstein was a “manipulative, cunning and controlling man” who tricked everyone into his orbit and said he “regretted” the pain his victims experienced.
  • Prosecutors said last week that Maxwell deserved at least 30 years behind bars
  • Maxwell’s lawyers had said she should be sentenced to no more than five years and three months, arguing that she was a scapegoat for Epstein’s crimes.

This is what a lawyer for some of the victims was out of court today:
