Google Stadia is adding a new region for the first time in almost two years, with the service expanding to Mexico this year.
Stadia will arrive in Mexico “later this year”
Google today announced several initiatives to expand its services in Mexico, with new programs and cultural development in the country.
These new efforts include support for Google Stadia and Immersive Stream in Mexico.
Mexico brings Stadia to 23 countries and is the first expansion we’ve seen since late 2020, when Google expanded the service to Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia and Switzerland.
In the rest of the cloud gaming space, both Xbox and Nvidia GeForce Now have made quite significant expansions in the last two years. Xbox Cloud Gaming is available in 28 countries, while Nvidia GeForce Now is supported in more than 75 countries.
There is still no set date for Stadia to arrive in Mexico, but Google says the service will arrive “later this year.”
This news comes just as Stadia has also expanded to a new platform, with Samsung’s Smart TV line and the new “Gaming Hub” feature. In recent weeks, Stadia has also greatly expanded its list of free game demos, as well as announcing some new games, such as Five Nights at Freddy’s. There are also indications that Stadia may soon support Nvidia’s GPUs behind the scenes, possibly hinting at a hardware upgrade.
9to5Google’s Take: A Significant Life Sign
It’s no real secret that Stadia has had a pretty tough situation over the last two years. The studies in the first part closed abruptly. The main game releases have been few and far between and overall the remaining excitement at Stadia seems to have run out.
But expanding into a new country, even if it is on the other side of the U.S. border, is the first significant sign of life Stadia has had in recent memory.
Of course, this does not solve Stadia’s current problems. Major game releases are still absent from the platform, which causes many players to be dissatisfied with the platform. The sequels to existing Stadia games, such as EA’s Madden series and the Star Wars Jedi series, won’t hit the platform either. Stadia not only lacks new games, but bleeds the ones she has.
Still, expanding to a new country is a good sign for Stadia, and we’re certainly happy to see that.
