How to delete your Instagram account

Instagram now allows you to delete your account directly from the Instagram app. This article shows you how to do it.

To comply with the updated guidelines in Apple’s App Store, Instagram in June 2022 added an option to its app for users to delete their account from the service.

Previously, it was only possible to delete your Instagram account by signing in to a web browser on a desktop browser or mobile device. However, Apple told developers that apps that offer account creation must also support account deletion starting June 30, 2022, so Instagram had to add the feature.

If you want to delete your account, please note that deleting your account is permanent and deletes your profile, photos, videos, comments, likes and followers.

That said, there’s a 30-day period when you can change your mind about deleting your account, so you can sign in to Instagram again after requesting deletion if you want to stop deleting.

Please note that instead of deleting your account, you can always temporarily deactivate your Instagram account and all your content will be hidden until you re-enable it by logging back in.

Here are the steps to delete (or deactivate) your Instagram account on your iPhone.

  1. Launch the Instagram app.
  2. Tap the profile icon in the lower right.
  3. Tap the three lines in the upper right corner.
  4. Tap Settings.
  5. Tap Account.
  6. Tap Delete account near the bottom of the menu.
  7. Confirm by tapping Delete account (or Deactivate account).

Instagram also allows you to hide your status, which prevents anyone from knowing when you were last online or when you were last active on the service. To find out how it works, check out our article on instructions.
