The writer behind Deus Ex has joined BioWare

BioWare has hired the writer behind the Deus Ex and Guardians of the Galaxy games from Eidos Montreal.

Mary DeMarle spent more than a decade at Eidos Montreal building the Deux Ex universe that fans know today.

DeMarle has been in charge of narrating and writing all of Deus Ex’s recent titles, including Mankind Divided, Human Revolution, and the mobile spin-offs Deus Ex: Go and Deus Ex: The Fall.

He also created the story and led the Guardians of the Galaxy editorial team for 2021, which won the Game Award for Best Narrative.

The narrative designer shared BioWare news on her LinkedIn page on Friday, but did not specify any specific projects. She may be involved in the upcoming Dragon Age Dreadwolf or Mass Effect 4.

The release follows the announcement of Gearbox owner Embracer in May to acquire Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montreal, Square Enix Montreal and an IP catalog that includes Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief and Legacy of Kain for $ 300 million .

Speaking to GI.biz last summer, DeMarle spoke about his view on the relationship between play and narrative in game development.

“For many, many years working in this industry, I’ve learned that history is often subordinate to the game,” DeMarle said. “But if I understand the game and what feeling I’m trying to evoke in the players, then I can understand that the game is trying to do it that way, and the story is here to support it or move it forward. How can the things I write help emphasize the things the game needs, etc.?

“As long as you always know the game you’re trying to make and understand why, then it just comes down to constant communication between the narrative and the game, and to constantly looking at it and understanding it from that point of view.”
