The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe weather warning on Sunday for harmful winds and heavy rains in Sydney, Illawarra and parts of Hunter, Central Tablelands and Southern Tablelands.
Parts of southern Sydney were especially hit by heavy rains on Saturday, with Wattamolla in the Royal National Park, Darkes Forest and Lucas Heights, all dropping more than 200 millimeters of rain.
The office said an east coast low-pressure system being developed on the NSW coast was sending humid air and patches of moderate to heavy rain to the east-central state.
“Moderate to heavy rains are expected to continue in parts of the mid-east throughout Sunday, and may also continue until Monday if the downpour approaches the coast.
The office said total rainfall was possible for six hours between 70 and 120 millimeters. Strong and harmful winds of 50 to 70 km / h are possible along the coast, with maximum gusts of up to 90 km / h.
Heavy rains will further contribute to the floods that are already being experienced and increase the potential for landslides. Harmful winds can cause debris on the roads and can cause trees to fall on softer soils, ”the office said.
Over the next few days a low-intensity flood warning has been issued on the Hawkesbury, Nepean and Colo rivers. From today large floods can also occur in Menangle and North Richmond.
There is also a severe weather warning for harmful surfing in the Sydney, Hunter and Illawarra regions. Surfing is expected to be very intense on Sunday. People have been urged to remain vigilant and monitor conditions.
