As season 4 of Stranger Things spoiled Max’s big final moment

They follow the spoilers of volume 2 of season 4 of Stranger Things.

Before volume one of the fourth season even dropped, Stranger Things co-creator Ross Duffer told IGN that Max is the “emotional center of the season.” But even that seems like he was a little underestimated.

When the first volume finally arrived, all everyone could talk about was Max’s two-sided struggle against Vecna and his own depression, which culminated in a high-profile confrontation set with the most haunting song of Kate Bush.

Max’s struggles, both internal and external, resonate more than anything Stranger Things has ever achieved. Because while all these weird and scary things keep happening around him, it’s Max’s pain and his willingness to keep fighting despite this pain that anchors the whole story, heart and soul.

That is, it is now impossible to imagine this show without Max. However, for a few brief minutes, this is exactly the future that Stranger Things wants you to believe is unfolding right before your eyes.

In the last episode of the fourth season, Max decides to offer himself as bait so that he can distract Vecna long enough for others to kill his physical body in the real world. But he’s not buying it, not at first. So Max talks about his brother Billy and the dark places where his mistreatment once took her.

“Billy made my life a hell, every chance I had. So sometimes, when I was in bed at night, I prayed for something to happen to him, something horrible … I wanted him out of my life forever. that it disappears “.

But when Max finally got his wish, when Billy really died, he sent her to an even darker place.

“I’ve tried to forgive myself. I’ve tried, but I can’t. So now, when I’m in bed at night, I pray that something happens to me. That something terrible happens to me. So that’s because I’m here. Because I just want you to take me and make me disappear. “

Lucas reacts badly, but he’s not really Lucas. Because when Max opened up, Vecna walked into that opening to grab her mind. And this time, not even Kate Bush can save her, not even now that her tape player is broken.

The Eleven also fails, leaving Max totally vulnerable to Vecna’s power. And then it happens. The only one he has worn all this season.

First, Max floats back in the air, just as he did before. But this time, she is not rescued. Suddenly, the breakup is gone. And then another. Blood spills from Max’s eyes as Vecna finally sacrifices her to break the barrier between worlds.

Even though the creators mocked that there was at least one death on the cards, we never would have imagined that Max would be the one to follow in his brother’s footsteps. As stated above, it is the “emotional center of the season.” And what is a show without that?

“I’m very scared,” Max yells. “I’m so scared. I don’t want to die. I’m not ready.” And it turns out that the writers weren’t prepared either because the Eleven intervenes at the time with the words, “No, you’re not going.” The memories the couple share are flooded into Eleven’s mind before the screen fades to black.

Two days, and a lot of meetings later, we finally find out that Max survived after all. Well, a little. “She died,” Lucas reveals. “I mean, clinically. But then he came back. The doctors don’t know how. They say it’s a miracle.”

A miracle of truth! Although our initial relief at seeing Max’s survival quickly gave way to disappointment. Because, yes, Max has become the heart and soul of this show, but by bringing her back so easily, it greatly undermines the impact of her “last” moments, not to mention the awesome performance worthy of Sadie Sink awards.

Following this path, the writers did have their cake and also ate it, because Max had to “die” for Vecna’s plan to develop, thus increasing the stakes more than ever, but neither they could risk losing a fan. -favorite before last season.

There’s a time when Lucas suggests that Max may never wake up again, even though we all know that’s not true. As much as the writers want to make us think this situation is desperate, it’s clear that Max will be back in action for the fifth season.

It could be argued that none of this matters because the stakes were increased by other deaths over the last two episodes, but none of them have had the same impact that Max’s disappearance would have.

It always seemed likely that Dr. Brenner would stop him this time, and we already predicted that Eddie would die too, because it’s much easier to kill a rookie than one of the main gang. And then there’s that annoying athlete whose death barely registered us, to the point that we might not even bother to search Google for his name for that piece.

Killing Max really would have meant a real game-changing moment for Stranger Things, one that could have even eclipsed her big Kate Bush moment. But instead, everything falls apart thanks to the cowardly setback of the show.

Hopefully the plot armor comes out at least for some members of the main gang in this last season. Because now that the end is approaching, maybe even the “emotional center of the season” could very well be in danger. And the show would go much better for him.
