Calgary police responded to reports of a single-vehicle collision around 12:30 p.m. Saturday at block 100 of Bermuda Drive NW While assisting in the collision, a member of the Fire Department of Calgary was dragged by the vehicle as the driver attempted to flee the scene. said a CPS statement. The firefighter was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
Calgary police then deployed a HAWCS helicopter to find and control the driver of the stolen vehicle. The vehicle was found and officers arrested a suspect and confirmed that the vehicle had been stolen.
Charges are pending against the suspect and the investigation continues.
Insp. Jeff Pennoyer, of the Calgary Police real-time operations center, said the driver showed little regard for the safety of the public or those primarily responsible.
“In incidents like these, our priority is always to ensure public safety first,” Pennoyer said. “The driver showed little respect for the safety of both the public and our first responders and, as such, we dedicated resources throughout the service to resolving this incident safely.”
