Summary

Research, innovation and knowledge management in health remain the top priorities of the WHO response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean (EMRO) supports priority research initiatives that address gaps in current knowledge about the COVID-19 pandemic. Through a specific call for proposals, in 2020 122 research proposals were received and reviewed, of which 17 were recommended for funding from eight countries. Ten countries in the region participated in the global solidarity trial to assess possible therapies for COVID-19. In addition, the WHO called for early serological and epidemiological research (‘COVID-19 Unit Studies’) on the general population, health workers, pregnant women and newborns, and to extend technical support to them. financial and material.

As of early 2020, academic articles on COVID-19 have been published in all issues of the Eastern Mediterranean Health Journal. More than 6,300 publications on COVID-19 are available on the WHO knowledge management portal in the last year alone. The WHO is also supporting countries in conducting studies to assess the field effectiveness of vaccines deployed at the national level. To build and strengthen countries’ capacities, regional webinars and cross-country meetings on research ethics, national health information systems, and evidence-based health policy development were conducted. With the support of the new WHO EMRO research and knowledge management pillar, countries in the region were well equipped to contribute to a global understanding of the characteristics of the new virus, as well as to employ a national response based on informed evidence. .
