MILFORD TOWNSHIP, Michigan (WXYZ) – A 6-year-old girl died Monday after a water rescue on a beach in Milford Township.
At around 5.30pm, a child was reported missing at Martindale Beach in Kensington Metropark.
Authorities began searching for the girl, who was believed to be missing in the water. A diving team responded to the scene.
People in the area volunteered and formed a human chain. They found her in an area with weeds in the sand. The first lifeguards pulled the girl out of the water and performed CPR on her.
The victim was taken to hospital and died.
For visitors who came out to celebrate Memorial Day, it was a surreal and terrifying experience.
“The ambulance got stuck in the sand and we were all working to try to move the ambulance,” said Dominique Springer, who was on the beach. “You see people coming together to try to find a child. No matter what happens, it’s a child involved.”
Several agencies, including Michigan State Police, responded to the scene.
“I came in as fast as I could because the girl is 6 years old. My girl is 6,” said witness Greg Krisher.
Researchers have interviewed the boy’s parents. The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office is in charge of the investigation.
“It’s sad, tears came to my eyes. I literally cried tears. They found her and put her on the stretcher, lifeless. Whether you’re looking at her or not, even for a second it’s crazy.” said Springer.
