Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has urged the Labor caucus to continue to look out as it prepares to lead a majority government.
“Going from opposition to government is difficult,” he said. “Sometimes Labor is looking at us instead of looking out. We looked out for three years.
“[As election night approached] I talked about two elections. I said I had two dates in mind … May 21 but secondly, where would we position ourselves in 2025 to be able to say we would take the following steps: a cheaper daycare, end climate wars, an anti-corruption commission, safer work, higher wages, freeing up pressure on the cost of living, affordable housing measures, TAFE free.
“Because the way you really change the country … is to consolidate the reforms. And to do that, you need a long-term Labor government. Only Labor do the big things in this country and I want it so universal health care and universal retirement are part of the great Australian history, created by Labor, I want universal childcare to be part of the great Australian history. “
