Bandcamp could see delays in payments to artists due to legal battle to maintain the Android payment system

The new owner of Bandcamp, Epic Games, and Google have reached an agreement on incoming changes to purchases from the Google app.

In a blog post posted by Bandcamp CEO Ethan Diamond, the company clarifies that it will continue to use the existing process within the app while the legal battle of Epic Games and Google unfolds.

Instead of having to switch to the new Google Play billing system, which requires all apps in the Google Store to use the Google payment system and cede 30% of all sales from the app to Google , Bandcamp will continue to put its usual 10% revenue share in a withholding guarantee.

This means that when the Google Play billing system comes into play on June 1, the warranty withholding pattern will start.

“We will move forward, we will continue the fight to enable artist business models like ours on Android,” the statement said.

However, due to this change in the payment system, the company has said that it may cause artists not to get paid as quickly as they currently do. They say, “Instead of receiving payment after 24 to 48 hours, artists may not receive payment until 15 to 45 days after a sale.”

“We know a lot of people use Bandcamp’s Android app to listen to their music purchases, and we’re committed to making sure this option is still available.

“With today’s presentation, we hope to ensure that fans can also continue to purchase music and products through the Android app, and that most of their support reaches the artist as soon as possible.”
