The Calgary police service confirms a 16-year-old has been charged after an investigation into reports that the teen had tried to hire someone to commit a murder for them.
The teen’s alleged attempt to offer a payment in exchange for killing someone was first reported to police on May 13th. Charges against the teen were filed after a six-week investigation.
The teenager, who was arrested on Tuesday, has been charged with:
- Lawyer for committing murder;
- Failure to comply with a court order; i,
- Possession of marijuana.
Police have not revealed who the defendant attempted to murder or the defendant’s gender.
Calgary police say this is a rare situation for the city.
“There’s definitely nothing like this that involves a young man with a 33-year career,” the sergeant said. Colin Chisholm with the CPS homicide unit in an interview with CTV News on Wednesday.
“The testimony was presented six weeks ago and we need time to gather information that is sufficient to produce as evidence for the Crown to be willing to proceed with a charge.”
Chisholm says the situation is shocking to the people listening to him.
“It’s disturbing to think that a 16-year-old would want to hire someone to murder another young man.”
The young male’s identity is being withheld due to the provisions of the Juvenile Criminal Justice Act, but Chisholm says the witness and the suspect knew each other.
The defendant is scheduled to go to court this Thursday.
