CBC News will launch a broadcast channel with Andrew Chang hosting a daily program

CBC News will launch a free streaming channel in the fall, with a daily news program hosted by Andrew Chang of The National as a flagship program, the public broadcaster announced Thursday.

According to a press release, the channel will have advertising and will be available for real-time playback 24 hours a day. Chang will retire from The National in August, with co-host Adrienne Arsenault taking over the reception from Monday to Thursday with a new headline, CBC News ’chief correspondent.

CBC News editor-in-chief Brodie Fenlon said the channel will offer the best of CBC journalism, with the goal of reaching a younger audience that has migrated to streaming.

“It will include things like The National and other original shows like The Fifth Estate and Marketplace,” he said. “It will include grouped stories that appear across the country and are combined around certain themes and will include some original programs.”

Fenlon said the channel will be different from CBC News Network, with an emphasis on long content and stories that have a longer lifespan.

“Part of this real-time playback strategy started when we noticed more than a year ago that a lot of people were watching The National at night on a connected TV, so they were broadcasting it instead of traditional cable.” .

Ian Hanomansing is the new permanent host of Cross Country Checkup and will continue to present The National on Friday and Sunday.

The news comes a week after the Canadian Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission renewed the CBC licensing agreement for an additional five years.
