The husband of a fourth-grader killed in this week’s mass shooting at a Texas elementary school has died of a heart attack, relatives told the New York Times. Joe Garcia was preparing for the funeral of Irma Garcia, his beloved high school and 24-year-old wife, when she collapsed and died Thursday, the newspaper reported.
The two are leaving four children, according to the report.
Irma Garcia, 46, was one of two teachers killed at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, along with 19 children. Relatives reported by authorities said Irma Garcia and her co-teacher Eva Mireles died trying to protect their students.
NBC News also reported the death of Joe Garcia citing his son Christian Garcia and a nephew, John Martinez.
“EXTREMELY heartbreaking and I come with deep sorrow to say that my Aunt Irma’s husband, Joe Garcia, has died of grief, I’m really speechless to know how we all feel,” Martinez wrote on his Twitter account. using the Spanish word for “aunt” and asking for family prayers.
