East Ottawa community devastated by storm

The devastation of the storm in the village of Hammond, east of Ottawa, is widespread.

Houses were crushed by rubble and families were displaced.

Repairs are not yet underway, as attention is kept on cleaning.

“What you’re seeing is essentially the roof that was grabbed from the wood and crashed into the houses,” said Mario Zanth, mayor of Clarence-Rockland.

Zanth says the community must seize the province to come down to the area and see the devastation.

He says that while the damage is significant, fortunately there were no serious injuries.

Residents with less damaged homes are still waiting for the electricity supply to recover.

“Those in the damaged houses went to a family in the area,” Zanth said. “We have an open shelter in Clarence Creek that offers showers and also the possibility for people to recharge their devices.”

Zanth says he has contacted Prime Minister Doug Ford several times for help as the community seeks to rebuild itself after the devastation.
