Tammy Abraham is one of the three English players in the Roma squad, along with Chris Smalling and Ainsley Maitland-Niles.
Jose Mourinho will aim to extend his perfect record in the European finals when his Roma team faces Feyenoord in the opening final of the Europa League on Wednesday.
The Portuguese has won all four finals: two with Porto and one with Inter Milan and Manchester United.
He will become the first coach to lead four teams in a European final.
“If I win I will be the first to win all the European trophies, but only if I win,” Mourinho said.
He led Porto to the success of the UEFA Cup in 2003 and to an impressive Champions League victory the following season. He again won Europe’s first prize with Inter Milan in 2010 and took Manchester United to the Europa League title, before the UEFA Cup in 2017.
Mourinho was christened “a special” when he first took over Chelsea in 2004, a nickname he now seems to want to leave in the past.
“The story of ‘Special One’ is an old story,” Mourinho added. “It simply came to our notice then [of my career]. When you have more maturity and stability, you think more about people and less about yourself.
“When you reach a final after a season of work, the job is done. It’s team time, not individual time.
“I don’t believe in magic potions, I don’t believe in magic spells. There’s nothing special to do, just be us as a team. Know the qualities we have, know the limitations we have.
“For me, no matter how much the final ends, this is a positive season for us.”
Feyenoord have not reached a European final since winning the UEFA Cup in 2002.
The team of Arne Slot, who finished third in the Dutch Eredivisie, has the top scorer in the Conference League in Cyriel Dessers with 10 goals.
However, Tammy Abraham, who has enjoyed a stellar first season with Roma after joining from Chelsea, has scored nine.
The English striker has 27 goals in all competitions, including two on the final day of the Serie A season against Torino to seal sixth place and Europa League standings.
Abraham also scored the only goal in the return leg of Roma’s victory in the semi-finals against Leicester.
Roma have not won a trophy since lifting the Italian Cup in 2008 and have not won a European trophy since the Fairs Cup – the predecessor of the Uefa / Europa League Cup – in 1961.
“For me, it’s not a small cup,” Abraham said in response to suggestions that the Conference League pales in comparison to the two established tournaments in Europe.
“I think every final is a final, whatever the competition. You get to the final, you want to win the final.
“It’s a trophy and these are the times when you look back on your career, saying you want to win trophies.”
“The fans would have filled the Bernabéu”
The National Arena with a capacity of 20,000 people was not large enough to meet the demand for tickets.
Feyenoord said they were disappointed with the allocation of 4,000 tickets and have asked fans not to buy into sales.
Mourinho said fans “would have filled” the Real Madrid’s Bernabéu, which has 81,000 spectators.
Roma reached the semi-finals of the Champions League in the 2017-18 season and the semi-finals of the Europa League last season.
Mourinho has rebuilt his reputation to some extent in Italy after a punishing season at the helm of Manchester United and Tottenham in the Premier League.
“His resume makes you suspicious of his team,” Slot said. “He is known for winning many finals.
“But most of all we have to focus on his team, the tactics and the different ways of playing. We don’t have to pay too much attention to the fact that he has such an impressive career in the finals.”
