Sakari Manninen scored in overtime to lift host Finland to a 4-3 victory over Canada in a wild game for the gold medal at the Men’s World Hockey Championships on Sunday.
Finland also conceded two goals from Mikael Granlund and another from Joel Armia. Dylan Cozens, Zach Whitecloud and Max Comtois scored for Canada, while Matt Barzal made three assists.
The host Finns maintained a 3-1 lead at the end of the third before the Canadians scored two goals with their goalkeeper withdrawn.
Whitecloud scored with 2:12 of the end to put Canada to a goal before Comtois forced the extension of three against three with the goal of the tie with 84 seconds of the end of the regulation.
Manninen’s winner was scored in the power play six minutes after Thomas Chabot was whistled by a hooked minor.
This is the fourth time Finland has won the world championship.
Canada led 1-0 at the start of the third period after Cozens opened the scoring in a Canadian power play four minutes after the second period.
Granlund, who plays for the NHL’s Nashville Predators, equalized early in the third with a five-on-three lead with Canadian Noah Gregor (tripping) and Cole Sillinger (high grip) both sitting in the box.
Canadian goalkeeper Chris Driedger suffered an injury during the play and was replaced by substitute Matt Tomkins, who quickly conceded a second power-play goal to Backlund.
Earlier on Sunday, the Czechs beat the United States 8-4 to win the bronze medal while David Pastrnak scored a hat trick, all in the third period.
