Microsoft has announced Project Moorcroft, a new initiative that will allow developers to launch demos directly on the Xbox Game Pass line and earn money to do so.
In a media briefing, corporate vice president Sarah Bond explained that Xbox has seen fewer and fewer opportunities for developers to put games in event rooms and present them directly to potential fans, noting that this could harm the smaller developers struggling to be seen. in an online space.
“So we said, you know what, why don’t we take the Game Pass and do it like the showfloor?” Bond continued. “Why don’t we make it possible for developers to take a piece, a level of their game, launch it in Game Pass, get excited about what’s to come, and also get these very valuable comments while they’re tweaking and preparing their game? release? “
Asked by Xbox Game Studios boss Matt Booty why a developer would spend valuable time doing a demo instead of working directly on their game, Bond added the positive point for Moorcroft developers:
“It’s important to us that everything we do is beneficial to both our players and our creators,” Bond said. “So, as part of that, we’ve set up the program and structured it so that developers get financial compensation for the game, it actually benefits them financially, and they also benefit from the great feedback.”

Here are some unknowns. Although we know that the program will start “next year”, no specific dates have been given. It is also unclear whether developers will be offered a flat fee for their demos or whether they will be paid based on Game Pass performance. We also don’t know Moorcroft’s app system, how its demo set will be curated, and whether being part of it guarantees developers a place in the Game Pass line at launch (or even blocks them).
Aside from providing more content for Game Pass subscribers and an intriguing deal for developers, this also clearly benefits Microsoft, as it will be able to detect high-performance gamers early in the development cycle, perhaps getting games to Game Pass. or increase promotion around it.
In related news, Microsoft also announced that its Cloud Streaming services will also be expanded this year, allowing Game Pass Ultimate subscribers to play “selected” games they have, even if they are not part of the Game Pass line. . Xbox Game Pass streaming will also hit TVs via a new Samsung app.
