LIVE Investigations have been opened into murder after a man was stabbed to death in downtown Oldham

A murder investigation has been opened after a man was stabbed in Oldham city center in the early hours of Saturday. Detectives are questioning a 30-year-old man on suspicion of murder following the Union Street incident.

Police were called on Saturday around 4:20 a.m. by the Northwest Ambulance Service to report a man suspected of stab wounds. The victim was taken to hospital in critical condition, but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Formal identification has not yet been made, but police believe the victim is a 40-year-old man from Oldham. A Greater Manchester police spokesman said initial investigations suggest the victim was stabbed after an “altercation with a man near the Light of Bengal restaurant”.

Following the incident, Metrolink services were suspended between Westwood and downtown Rochdale. Metrolink tweeted: “Due to a police incident, there is currently no service between Westwood and Rochdale Town Center in Rochdale via the Oldham Line. Acceptance of tickets for bus services: 59, 81, 83, 181, 182, 184, 409, 415, 471. and rail services between Manchester Victoria and Rochdale “.
