West White Rose lives after all. Cenovus says the first oil is expected for the first half of 2026 with the forecast of maximum production reaching 80,000 barrels per day.
Alex Pourbaix, president and CEO of Cenovus, says the project has been completed by about 65%.
Cenovus and Suncor have signed an agreement whereby Cenovus will reduce its work interest in West White Rose and satellite extensions, while Suncor will take a larger stake.
Cenovus, formerly Husky Energy, halted construction of the West White Rose project in September 2020 following a fall in world oil prices.
The company said at the time that it was reviewing its operations in the province, which caused anxiety that it would completely abandon operations at the White Rose oil field.

Trades NL says the 2020 decision to halt project construction was a “devastating blow” to skilled trade workers across the province.
Executive Director Darin King believes the West White Rose project is critical to the future of the province’s construction and construction industry.
West White Rose is expected to generate nearly $ 20 billion in GDP and more than $ 7 billion in labor revenue for Newfoundland and Labrador over the 14 years of the project, creating approximately 250 permanent jobs on the platform and up to 1,500 more direct and indirect jobs.
