Sajid Javid announces the activation of mandatory NHS vaccines

A 26-year-old graduate has died from a rare complication of the AstraZeneca Covid vaccine after receiving obsolete information about the risk of blood clots, the Birmingham Forensic Court has learned.

Jack Hurn, originally from Devon but living in Redditch, Worcestershire at the time, died in June 2021 less than two weeks after receiving the blow.

A one-week investigation was said to have been reported by a GP. Hurn said the risk of a blood clot in the brain for his age group was one in 250,000, at a time when the most recent NHS estimate estimated it to be one in 50,000.

The investigation heard that the graduate in automotive design from Coventry University went ahead with his first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine on May 29, after the Dudley Revival Fairs Vaccination Center informed him that they did not have stock of the Pfizer equivalent.

Mr Hurn felt unwell eight days after the puncture and died at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham on 11 June, despite undergoing emergency surgery. Doctors described that he had “catastrophic” blood clots in his brain.

NHS guidance at the time stated that patients under the age of 40 should be offered an alternative to the AstraZeneca vaccine, although they could decide “an informed choice” to receive it.

Recording a narrative verdict on Friday, Birmingham area coroner Emma Brown said: “She agrees that Jack was told the risk was one in 250,000.

“There is no doubt that he took this into account.

“At the time, the Joint Committee on Vaccines and Immunization had advised that it was preferable for adults under the age of 40 without underlying conditions to be offered an alternative to the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine.

“But people could make an informed decision to get the AstraZeneca vaccine for earlier protection.

He added: “Jack did not receive all the information to make an informed choice.

“In particular, the risk of complications for their age group was underestimated.”

Prior to the investigation, attorney Michael Portman-Hann said the family hoped he would help answer some of the questions they had about Jack’s death.

At the time, Portman-Hann said: “Jack, a first-class graduate of Coventry University, had recently bought his first home with his partner, Alex Jones, who also received his vaccine at the same time. It was only after his death that he learned what he intended to propose that summer.

“Jack, Tracey and Peter’s parents, his sister, Abby, Alex and their families are completely devastated and are still trying to accept what happened. Jack and Alex asked the vaccine clinic staff about the alternative. of Pfizer, as they were aware of concerns about the use of Astra Zeneca for younger people.

“Center staff assured Alex and Jack that the vaccine was safe, and with no dose of Pfizer available that day, they were encouraged by the vaccine staff to go ahead with what was being offered.”
