McLaren has “mechanisms” that could end in advance with the agreement of Daniel Ricciardo in F1

By switching from Renault to McLaren, Ricciardo signed a three-year contract that will, in theory, keep him at Woking until the end of the 2023 season.

The Australian is under increasing pressure after a difficult start to his life at McLaren, and Brown recently admitted that Ricciardo’s performances have not met the team’s expectations.

Ricciardo accepted Brown’s claim as “quite true”, but the eight-time Grand Prix winner insisted he remains confident he can change things.

“I don’t want to get into the contract, but there are mechanisms in which we are committed to each other and mechanisms in which we are not,” Brown told Monaco.

“I talked to Daniel about it. We’re not getting the results we both hoped for, but we’re both going to keep working.

“I think he showed up at Monza [last year] you can win races. We also need to develop our race car; he is not able to win races. But we would like to see it above the grid.

“It simply came to our notice then. And then we’ve increased our testing schedule, but we’re in no hurry. “

Ricciardo’s misery continues in Monaco

Ricciardo’s tough start to the 2022 season continued on Friday when he crashed into the pool during his first round of second training.

He marked the first fall of the weekend and was a setback for Ricciardo’s preparations for a weekend where teammate Lando Norris seems to be regaining the lead, although he is still recovering from tonsillitis.

As a result of the damage to his car, Ricciardo has only had one hour of racing so far this weekend, which left him with a final 60-minute session on Saturday ahead of the all-important classification.

Ricciardo described the accident as “strange”, but acknowledged that his configuration had gone too far before the incident.

“We can recover”

“It was weird,” he said. “I think if someone crashes there, it’s usually seen at the exit if maybe it gets too voracious on turn 14 and then loses the car. I already started losing the car almost before turn 13. We pushed it too hard with some things with the configuration.

“We had a good day and obviously you try some things for FP2, you try to maximize the performance a little more, but let’s say we overcame it and you don’t know until you try.

“It was my first lap, so I really couldn’t read much, it obviously happened right away. I’m fine, and the boys and girls have work to do tonight, but it’s okay.

“We will return tomorrow, it’s a bit of a shame but I’m still confident. I had a good feeling this morning so I can recover and we as a team too. “
