Another Twitter user said, “Maybe this is crazy for me, but an old-fashioned man jumped out of a wheelchair and tried to break the bulletproof glass of the Mona Lisa.
“Then he smears the cake on the glass and throws roses everywhere before he is approached by security?”
The Mona Lisa attracts about 10.2 million people a year, and it is estimated that about 80% of museum visitors come just to see the work. A new glue system has recently been introduced to create shorter waiting times and a more intimate painting experience.
The 16th-century Renaissance masterpiece has been behind glass since a Bolivian man threw a stone at the painting in December 1956 and damaged his left elbow. In 2009, a Russian woman threw an empty cup of tea into the paint, which lightly scratched the box.
The painting was stolen in 1911 by a museum employee, which increased the painting’s international fame.
