“His heart is in a good place, but he’s wrong in his thinking about us,” said Ralph C. Lorigo, president of the Erie County Conservative Party. “This quick jump, which is suddenly the weapon that kills people instead of the person, is certainly not 100 percent true.”
Mr. Lorigo said he had endorsed Mr. Jacobs earlier this year when other conservatives doubted him. But last Monday, he demanded that the congressman come to his office and made it clear that he would encourage a major challenge.
“He understood that this was potentially a political suicide,” Mr. Lorigo.
Even before making his decision, several Republicans were already queuing up to run against Mr. Jacobs, angry at both his comments and the way he had surprised his party mates, including some who had already supported him.
“We deserved the courtesy of a warning,” said State Sen. George Borrello, a second-term Republican from Irving, New York, south of Buffalo, who said he did not believe Mr. Jacobs were “a few games.” emotional response, ”but they were planned in advance.
Mr. Borrello, who said on Friday that he was considering running for the seat, added that the actions of Mr. Jacobs was especially annoyed considering that the congressman had sought “actively and aggressively” the support of pro-gun groups such as the NRA and the 1791 Society.

“And these people rightly feel betrayed,” he said.
Other potential Republican rivals were Mike Sigler, Tompkins County lawmaker, and Marc Cenedella, a Conservative businessman.
The most formidable threat, however, came from Nicholas A. Langworthy, a Republican leader in Erie County who currently serves as president of the state Republican Party.
