Police were found dead after swimming in the Swansea River as the first published photo

South Wales police have named Kane Edwards a 13-year-old boy who died after swimming in the River Tawe in Swansea. The young man appears to have been in trouble while on the water, prompting extensive search involving police, firefighters, ambulances and coastguard personnel and a helicopter on the afternoon of Tuesday 24 May.

He was among a number of children who had been seen swimming in the river but were not seen coming out of the water. Police in South Wales have now confirmed the young man’s identity. A South Wales police spokesman said on Wednesday: “South Wales police can confirm that the child who died yesterday after being in distress on the River Tawe was Kane Edwards, 13 “Officers have called for them to mourn and accept their loss in private.”

Detective Sergeant Kristian Burt of the South Wales Police said yesterday: “At 4.59pm yesterday, Tuesday 24 May, a report was received that the children had been swimming in the River Tawe, Morriston, Swansea: A 13-year-old boy had been in trouble and was not seen leaving the river, and police, firefighters, ambulances, coastguards and a police helicopter have carried out a thorough search.

“The boy’s body was found in the river near Swansea Enterprise Park at around 6pm and could not be resuscitated despite the efforts of the emergency services. Her family has been informed and is receiving support at this time. Morriston Comprehensive School said the community had been “devastated” by the sudden death of one of its students and that support was being given to the young man’s friends and staff. Martin Franklin, director of Morriston Comprehensive School, said: “Our entire school community is devastated by the news and our thoughts are with our student’s family and friends at this difficult time. Students and staff are welcome. support and we “ask that the privacy of the school community and the student’s friends and family be respected.”
